How do I setup Outlook Express to get my e-mails?


The following is a general guide to setting up Microsoft’s Outlook Express versions 5 and 6 to enable you to send and receive emails.


For this example I have use created a user called Paul Temple.

1. Having Outlook Express loaded, from the main window you will be able to set up Outlook Express to send and retrieve mail from the email account you have hosted with 1&1. Click on 'Tools' -> 'Accounts' to enter into this set-up process.

2. Here a pop-up screen will appear, with 4 tabs - 'All', 'Mail', 'News', 'Directory Service' - Click on the "Add" button on the Left Hand side and select Mail from the options.

3. The display name is the name that will appear in the From field every time you send an email. In the available space, enter the name you wish to appear (for FAQ purposes the sample has Paul Temple) and then click on 'Next'.

4. Type in the name of the email address you are configuring (e.g. paul.teample@1and1faq.co.uk) and click on the 'Next' button.

5. Sending and retrieving mails requires the use of email servers. For your email account, the Incoming mail server is an POP3 server, this is not the default server selected in Outlook Express, so you will need to click on the drop down box and Select POP3 from the list.

Also you will be required to, enter the addresses for the incoming and outgoing mail servers are required.

The incoming mail server address is: pop.1and1.co.uk
The outgoing mail server address is: auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk



Click on 'Next' to proceed to the next page.

Here you must have your email username and password for the account you are configuring ready.


In here you will see the all of the email accounts you have configured under your package. From there you will be able to obtain your username and password for that specified email account.

Enter your username and password details, and it is up to you if you wish the system to remember your password or if you want to re-enter it each time youe access your mail. Click next to proceed to the next step.

You are almost Finished, click Next and Finish.

This setup Outlook Express so that you can recieve e-mail, however we use an authentication system to help prevent spam emails being sent, you will now need to set Outlook Express to use our Authenticated email servers.

To do this please click on Tools and then Accounts.





Click on the "Mail" Tab, with will show only email accounts. Select your email
account and then press the "Properties Button".

This will show you all the settings for you email account in Outlook Express, click on the "Servers" Tab.

Warning please do NOT change pop or smtp setting as shown in this image.

The Server setting Must remain as

pop.1and1.co.uk
auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk

At the bottom of the Window there is a section called "Outgoing Mail Server". You will need to tick the box "My server requires authenication".

As default Outlook express should do all the setting for this change, however to check click on the "Settings" button, the option "Use same settings as my incomming mail server" should be ticked. Click on "OK" to close this window. The Click on "OK".

8. You have now fully set up your Outlook Express email client to Send &
Recieve emails.
